How to Successfully Build a Professional Network
Networking allows you to meet and engage with others in your field. Professional connections made through networking broaden your base of resources and provide mentoring opportunities
An excellent way to network is to attend L&D tradeshows in your area. The ASTD, eLearning Guild and STC regularly host tradeshows in most metropolitan areas. At tradeshows there are many opportunities to branch out and meet your L&D colleagues, speak to vendors, and attend seminars and workshops.
The most effective way to build a professional network is to join professional associations and networking groups that meet regularly in your area.
Follow these steps to make sure you are successful while networking:
- Have your Business Card Available
When you attend tradeshows and functions, use your business card as a networking tool. Hand it out to key people from different companies.
- Collect Business Cards while Networking
Gather business cards and collect the contact information of the people you meet. Write notes on the back of business cards, such as where you met and the relevant information that was discussed.
- Keep it Short and Sweet
Think of networking as an elevator pitch. You want to effectively communicate with other professionals in a short amount of time. Keep your communication open and professional and ask questions that allow others to share with you.
- Be Proactive
Take advantage of the opportunity to meet and talk to people. Be outgoing and sociable. Speak up at meetings. Ask for the referrals you seek and offer advice on the referrals that others seek.
- Maintain Relationships
Maintain contact with the professionals you meet through networking. Keep in touch with your new connections.
