Top Concerns for CLOs in 2009

To create the below list of the top concerns of Chief Learning Officers in 2009, we've researched the most frequent topics covered in major learning symposia across the United States in the previous year.

To catch the eye of hiring decision makers, incorporate these qualities into your resume where applicable. When resources are limited, candidates with the below skills might be contacted first.

Top Concerns for CLOs in 2009 Target your Resume to Address CLO Concerns
Limited resources to complete objectives
  • Indicate your ability to "work effectively in fast-paced environments" with "tight deadlines."
  • Indicate your "ability to assimilate quickly," "work well in diverse and virtual teams," and "move projects forward."
Organizational Change
  • Incorporate phrases such as Organizational Change, Change Management or similar keywords into the skills summary or skills listed at the top of your resume.
  • Also, include these keywords in the body of your resume where appropriate along with a concise description of the change project and your specific role in it.
Talent Development
  – Succession Planning
  – Developing Leaders
  – Coaching Programs
  • State any training development or delivery experience you have in the areas of Employee, Leadership, and Executive Development, along with projects that involve the subjects of Talent and Succession Planning.
  • Include any training certifications or professional development forums on these subjects that you have attended, e.g., MBTI and DDI.
  • If you have managed people, include any programs for Talent Development and/or Succession Planning that you implemented for your team during your management tenure.
e-Learning
  • Use the phrase e-Learning in your resume whenever applicable. If appropriate, incorporate e-Learning in your actual title.
  • Include any e-Learning development tools you have experience with in a Technical Skills section or table.
  • At the end of each project description or job include a section called "Tools." In this section you can list all technical tools used during that project. Be sure to note even the most common (e.g., MS Office Suite) and obscure technologies used.
Experiential Learning
  • Evaluate your training development and/or delivery experience to determine if there were elements of Experiential Learning in past projects.
  • In these instances, include "Experiential Learning" as part of your description of the project. Depending upon the nature of the project you are applying for, you will want to describe what made the training experiential. You can emphasize projects where games were used, which are a popular experiential learning technique.
  • You can go a step further to describe how the Experiential Learning incorporated goal setting, experimenting, observing, reviewing and action planning in the learning process.
Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Populate your resume with the acronym "LMS" and indicate each specific LMS you used or became familiar with on each project.
  • Be specific about your involvement with the LMS. For example, were you involved with selection, implementation, customization, administration, management, support, outsourced services, or client/vendor liaison? Describe your role with the LMS.
  • Be sure to include a list of each LMS with which you are familiar. Include the company name of the LMS. List this in a Technical Skills section, which can be presented near the top of your resume (if you are a technical consultant) or at the end (if you are more of a strategic consultant).
